A 35-year-old businessmen allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house located near Pitiliyon Ka Chauraha in the Jauhari Bazar area of the Walled city, the police said.

Police said the deceased, identified as Sumit Agrawal, owned a cold storage and was a share broker. “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. The deceased had earlier attempted suicide with his elder brother Amit Agrawal (37) in April by consuming poison. While Amit succumbed, Sumit survived,” said Kamlesh Kumar Sharma, investigating officer.

Sumit is survived by his 65-year-old father Prabhu Narayan Agrawal. A two-line suicide note was recovered from his possession, which read, “Maine apni marzi se ye faisla liya. Mere jane k baad koi bhi pitaji ko pareshan na kare.” (I have taken this decision on my own. After my death, my father should not be harassed). Sumit’s relatives said he was under depression from the past one-and-a-half year. His aunt Uma Devi said, “Both Sumit and Amit were in depression as their business was badly hit by demonetisation and GST added to their woes.”

“After the first suicide attempt, I used to urge him share his problems with me and other family members, but he remained silent...,” she added.

A cousin of Sumit, who didn’t wanted to be named, alleged that he was being mentally harassed by some lenders. She said, “Just two days ago, some person named as Sogan had come with a few people and had told him (Sumit) to return his money. Sumit bhaiya (brother) asked for some more time. Sogan said he will come back after two-three days.”
