Dalit man lynched ‘over affair’

A 22-year-old Dalit man was beaten to death in Satada village of Churu district Thursday evening allegedly over his affair with a woman of so-called upper caste, police said.

Asharam Meghwal’s body was recovered from the house of the accused, police said. They said a case under IPC section 302 (murder) and under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act has been registered against three people - brothers Dinesh Jangid, Shravan Jangid and Anil Jangid - based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family.

Station house officer of Ratannagar police station Rakesh Sankhla said two of the accused brothers have been detained and were being questioned, without identifyin­g who the two were.

The police was told Meghwal was tied and beaten until he died.

Churu additional superin- tendent of police Anil Singh Chouhan according to their preliminar­y investigat­ion, Meghwal was in an affair with a woman that villagers had disapprove­d owing to their caste.

Churu superinten­dent of police Rammurti Joshi told HT that the victim’s family has refused to let the police get the autopsy conducted until the three accused have been arrested. Police teams are raiding possible hideouts to locate the third accused.
