Snap elections in Lanka on January 5, says Sirisena
After dissolving Parliament on Friday, five days before it was scheduled to reconvene, Sri Lanka’s president called for snap polls on January 5 in a bid to stave off a deepening political crisis over his dismissal of Ranil Wickremasinghe as prime minister. A notification on Saturday from President Maithripala Sirisena said the names of candidates will be called before November 26. Sirisena’s decision to dissolve parliament has drawn criticism from Western powers, including the United States and Britain. The President’s rivals are set to challenge his ‘illegal and unconstitutional’ decision in the Supreme Court on Monday.
