Needing 60 runs to win from 55 balls with nine wickets in hand, South Africa seemed fairly in control of proceedings in their Group A clash against hosts West Indies at the ongoing ICC Women’s World T20, here on Wednesday.

With Lizelle Lee and Marizanne Kapp at the crease, the Proteas were slowly but steadily marching towards their target of 108.

Enter Deandra Dottin and Stafanie Taylor. The former, who grabbed 5/5 in the West Indies’ opening win over Bangladesh, got rid of opener Lee in the last ball of the 11th over.

From there, everything that could have gone wrong for South Africa did go wrong. Four deliveries after Lee’s wicket, Dottin ran out opposition skipper Dane van Niekerk with a brilliant direct hit.

Skipper Taylor then took charge, bagging the wickets of Sune Luus, Mignon du Preez, Chloe Tryon and Shabnim Ismail as she finished with figures of 4-12. The two remaining wickets were claimed through run outs as the Windies ended up comfortable winners.

Taylor, who claimed the Player of the Match accolade, made no secret of her admiration for teammate Dottin’s allround ability.

For South Africa, it was a day to forget after having restricted the hosts to 107/7 in 20 overs, with Ismail grabbing 3/12 from her four overs.

With two wins from two games, West Indies are on course for progressing to the semi-finals. They will face Sri Lanka at the same venue on Friday night.

South Africa, on the other hand, will take on England in a potentially decisive encounter in terms of who makes the semifinal cut, here on Friday as well. Brief scores: West Indies 107/7 in 20 overs (Knight 32, McLean 28; Ismail 3/12) beat South Africa 76 all out in 18.4 overs (Kapp 26, Lee 24; Taylor 4/12) by 31 runs.

In another game, Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 25 runs in a lowscoring affair. Having managed just 97/7, the Lankans rode on Chamari Atapattu’s 3/17 to bowl out Bangladesh for 72.
