Draw Aaron Finch’s innings lasted only three balls. Ishant drew him for a drive but the ball moved in to take an inside edge and crash into his stumps. Against spin Finch has just one dismissal at an average of 83 but against pace he has now been dismissed four times at an average of 23.50.

Despite finding more swing (1.06° v 0.74°) and more seam (0.72° v 0.54°) than Australia did in the first 20 overs of the innings, India only pitched 27% in thefulllengthrangecomparedto 40% for Australia. Had India scored more than 250, they could have been encouraged to bowl a fuller length and attack.

By bowling slower and fuller, Ashwin unlocked Australia’s middle order with intelligence and skill.
