Maha tops list of engg colleges barred from admissions
MUMBAI: Twenty-six technical (engineering) institutes from Maharashtra, highest in the country, were barred from conducting admissions in 2018-19 over violation of admission and infrastructure norms, according to the data released by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in response to a query raised in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
The state was followed by Andhra Pradesh (24) and Uttar Pradesh (20).
“All the institutes have to apply for approval as per rules and regulations mentioned in the approval process handbook (APH). Based on our investigation and the complaints we received, the action is initiated against erring institutes as per provisions of the APH,” said an official from AICTE.
Information provided by the AICTE revealed that Maharashtra managed to get maximum approvals for setting up new technical institutes in 2018-19 — 1,558 out of 10,423 — for the current academic year.
Although several institutes across India have been banned by AICTE in the last three academic years, the number has more than doubled this year.
