Gu­j­jars open fire, pelt stones on cops

JAIPUR: As many as six po­lice per­son­nel were in­jured af­ter pro­tes­tors de­mand­ing 5% reser­va­tion in govern­ment jobs and ed­u­ca­tional in­sti­tutes for the Gu­j­jar com­mu­nity opened fire, burnt ve­hi­cles and pelted stones in Dholpur on Sun­day.

Dholpur su­per­in­ten­dent of po­lice (SP) Ajay Singh said mem­bers of the Gu­j­jar com­mu­nity blocked the Agra-morena high­way in the af­ter­noon and then started pelt­ing stones at po­lice­men sta­tioned a few me­tres away. They then climbed houses on the side of the high­way and opened fire from coun­try made pis­tols.

The an­gry ag­i­ta­tors also torched three po­lice ve­hi­cles.

The po­lice, in turn, fired tear gas shells to dis­perse the mob af­ter about half a dozen po­lice per­son­nel were in­jured in the vi­o­lence. “The sit­u­a­tion is un­der con­trol now,” Singh said.

Sun­day was the third day of the Gu­j­jar ag­i­ta­tion.



Mem­bers of the Gu­j­jar com­mu­nity blocked Na­tional High­way 58 in Ajmer on Sun­day.
