PROTESTS END IN MIZORAM
AIZAWL, IMPHAL, GUWAHATI: Civil society groups and student organisations in Mizoram ended their protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on Wednesday after the Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die without the passage of the contentious legislation.
In Manipur’s Imphal, however, prohibitory orders continue to be imposed while locals took to the streets in large numbers to protest against the bill, officials said. Mobile internet services will remain suspended in the state till Saturday in wake of the stir.
Assam finance minister and senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma said not passing the citizenship bill in Rajya Sabha was a defeat for Assam. “Without the Bill, 17 (assembly) constituencies will go to Bangladeshi Muslims,” he told reporters.
