Nagaur man held for smuggling 8 kg opium in Ganganagar dist

JAIPUR: A 38-year-old man was arrested by the Ganganagar police for smuggling drugs from Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh to various regions of the state and Punjab.

Prashant Kaushik, SHO , Jawahar Nagar police station, said Govind Saharan who hails from Nagaur has been smuggling opium for the last five years. The police also recovered 8kg opium from him. A special team was formed to nab Saharan and break the drug supply chain, said Kaushik. The arrest of Saharan was a culminatio­n of series of arrest sand contraband seizures by the police last week.

The police , last week, had arrested five people and seized a total of 11.50kg of opium and Rs 10.80 lakh in cash following an early morning raid at four houses in Badinga village.

The five arrested were identified as Sarvan Singh, Ranjeet Singh, Hardeep Singh, Anoopram Meghwal and Vijendra alias Bhinda. The identity of Saharan was revealed to cops by Sarvan, an arrested accused.

Local sellers used to raise profit up to 10 times by increasing volume of opium by mixing it with crushed biscuits.

“Saharan bought drugs from Mandsaur and sold it at Rs 1.5 lakh per kg to local sellers. The sellers then mixed the contraband with crushed biscuits and sold it in packets of 10 gm each. Each packet fetched Rs 1500, which means a local supplier could earn up to Rs 10 lakh per kilogram,” said Kaushik.

“Saharan used to buy drugs from Mandsaur and sell it at Rs 1.5 lakh per kg to locals. Sellers used to mix crushed particles of sweet biscuits to increase quantity and make packets of 10 grams. Each packet was sold at sold at Rs 1500,” said Kaushik.
