SMS hospital doctors call off strike
JAIPUR: The resident doctors of Sawai Man Singh Medical College and Hospital called off their strike, in Jaipur on Thursday.
“We doctors do not want to go on strike, but are forced... Security was the main issue and a woman resident doctor was beaten,” said Dr Vijay Choudhary, the president of Jaipur Association of Resident Doctors (JARD), while calling off the strike.
About 1,500 resident doctors of the SMS medical college had gone on a strike on Tuesday morning after a resident doctor, Dr Sanjana Choudhary, was all egedly beaten up by t he attendants of a patient at Haribux Kanwatia hospital at Shastri Nagar in the city on Monday night. The attackers accused the hos p i t a l d o c t o r o f g i v i ng improper treatment to the patient.
Dr Vijay said regular talks were going on with the college principal and administration and finally on Thursday, the police check post at Kanwatia hospital has been opened again, which was closed in 2012. Five police personnel including the check post in-charge and four constables have been deployed and one of the constables will be on duty in hospital round-theclock. Six guards have been shifted from the SMS hospital to Kanwatia hospital.
In regard to the demand for removing medical superintendent of Kanwatia hospital, Dr Vijay said three such incidents of misbehaviour with resident doctors took place at Kanwatia hospital in last two months and hospital superintendent Dr L Harsh- vardhan has been very slow in taking action. Therefore, it was demanded to remove him.
The college principal has formed a committee to investigate the complaint against Dr Harshvardhan and a decision will be taken after the committee submits the report, Dr Vijay informed.
SMS medical college principal Dr Sudhir Bhandari said, “The resident doctors have called off their strike and have joined duty at 11am.” He said a committee has been formed, which will investigate the complaint of resident students against Dr Harshvardhan and decision will be taken after the report.
For last two days, patients coming to the government hospitals in the city were facing problems due to the strike.
The hospital and college administration had made alternative arrangements and had deployed medical officers and faculty members to look after the patients in outpatient and inpatient departments.
SMS Medical College has seven attached hospitals to it and 1,500 residents of all these hospitals had gone on strike from Tuesday protesting misbehaviour and manhandling with their colleague.
