Shami charged with domestic violence
KOLKATA: India pacer Mohammed S h a mi h a s b e e n f o r mal l y charged with domestic violence and sexual harassment by the Kolkata police. The chargesheet was filed on Thursday, nearly a year after his wife filed a police complaint against Shami.
BCCI had recently banned Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul for two matches for their comments about women on a TV chat show.
BCCI ombudsman Justice DK Jain will issue his verdict in the case and the board has allowed the two to represent India in the meantime.
BCCI YET TO ACT
The Board, however, is yet to act on Shami’s case but if it does, the pacer’s World Cup participation could be under the cloud.
News of the marital discord reached public domain last year when his wife, Hasin Jahan, took to Facebook to level multiple charges against her husband including domestic violence. Jahan, a former model, had filed a complaint against four people in Shami’s family in March last year.
Shami (28), one of the mainstays of the India pace attack, has denied the allegations.
Hasin Jahan said she had been told about the charge-sheet filed by the police but did not have the details.
“I have been told that police have submitted the chargesheet mentioning IPC sections 498A (domestic violence) and 354A (sexual harassment),” she said.
Mohd Shami’s lawyer Salim Rahaman s ai d t hey would respond appropriately to the police charge-sheet.
When the cricketer’s wife went public last year, she had also accused Shami of receiving money from a Pakistani woman. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had ordered its own inquiry and cleared Shami of the charge.
