SPO SHOT DEAD OUTSIDE HOUSE IN SHOPIAN

SRINAGAR: Militants killed a woman Special Police Officer (SPO) on Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, police said.

The t errorists shot dead Khushboo Jan from close range while she was in her home village, Vehil.

“She suffered critical bullet injuries around 2.40 p.m. and was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed,” the police added.

A cordon and search operation was underway to trace the assailants.

SPOS are engaged by the state police on fixed monthly remunerati­on to fight militancy in the state. They are neither imparted training to handle firearms nor are weapons issued to them.

The SPOS represent the lowest rung of police officials below the state constabula­ry that is adequately trained to handle weapons and are also issued service weapons.

ENCOUNTER BREAKS OUT IN KULGAM

Meanwhile, an encounter broke out Saturday between militants and security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. A brief exchange of fire took place between the forces and the ultras in Kulgam in south Kashmir, a police official said. He said the area has been cordoned off and searches were being carried out to track the militants. So far, there have been no report of any casualty, he said.

3 HELD FOR FIRING GUN SHOTS IN AIR IN JAMMU

Police said three youths were arrested Saturday for allegedly firing gun shots in the air outside Hari Niwas Palace here creating panic among people.

The search for their another accomplice is underway, a police spokesman said. He said four youths, who were on their way out from the bar at Hari Niwas, fired gun shots in the air outside the hotel late Friday night.

Later they fled from the spot in an SUV and a motorcycle. A case was registered under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code.
