JAIPUR: Six police personnel of Pisangan police station in Ajmer district were suspended and the remaining staff sent to the police lines after a man detained by the police in a theft case allegedly committed suicide inside the police station’s toilet.

The man, Mangilal Jat (30), native of Kalesara area, was arrested by the Pisangan police on Monday afternoon for allegedly stealing ornaments from a temple located at Mewariya road area in Ajmer.

Senior police officials, including inspector general of police (IGP) for Ajmer range Sanjeeb Narzary and superintendent of police (SP) Kunwar Rashtradeep, reached the spot for inspection.

“Six police personnel have been suspended and the entire staff has been sent to police lines. A judicial probe has ordered in this matter,” said Rashtradeep.

A senior police official on the condition of anonymity said, “Around 3 pm on Monday, Jat was alone in the lock-up. Seeing it as the right time, he tore out the piece of carpet which was laid on the floor of lock-up and made a rope like structure from it. Jat hid the rope like structure inside the t-shirt and requested a sentry to take him to toilet.”

“The sentry took him to toilet where Jat hanged himself from the ventilator. When he did not come out from the toilet for fivesix minutes, the sentry knocked the door, but Jat didn’t respond, following which the sentry informed other members of the police station. The gate was broken and Jat was found hanging,” the police officer added.

Jat was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The six suspended policemen were station house officer Lakshman Singh and sub-inspector Amar Chand and constables Surendra Singh, Kishan Lal, Vijendra Yadav and Rekha.
