EDUCATION MEET Ministers skip event; governor says varsities work to be monitored
JAIPUR: Governor Kalraj Mishra on Monday said that universities should carry out academic activities throughout the year, there should be innovations in higher education and good results be brought in development of education.
The governor, who is the chancellor of state universities, presided over a meeting of the vice-chancellors’ coordination committee at the Raj Bhawan. Several ministers including higher education minister Bhanwar Singh Bhati, health minister Raghu Sharma, technical education minister Dr Subhash Garg, agriculture minister Lalchand Katria and skill development minister Ashok Chandna were invited, none of them turned up for the meeting. Vice-chancellors of all state universities, officials from the UGC and the union HRD ministry and state government officials were present.
The governor announced that each year one university in the state would be awarded for excellence based on its activities in higher education, innovations and progress made thorough the year. He said the governor’s office will continuously monitor and review the works done by the universities.the governor said that vice chancellors are eminent citizens of the state and country because they shape the future of the country. He said the c ountry and t he s t at e will progress with the holistic and meaningful efforts of vice chancellors. “If vice chancellors make efforts then universities will progress and prosper and the country will get the finest citizens,” he said.
Governor Mishra said “In this age of technology, universities have to work in the changed social circumstances. Universities play a significant role in the holistic development of the country. Universities are the nurseries for nurturing the potential of the youth and to harness their energy,”
He said the aspirations of the society and country from higher education are i ncreasing. “There are several challenges in higher education that need to be addressed. Vice chancellors should be innovative, inspire the youth and be a guide to them and universities should set an example for the society through innovations and encouragement,” he advised.
The governor suggested that the universities share their innovations as this will bring a big change and that skill development should be linked to local industry. “If education inculcates social responsibility and personality development of students then universities can bring a great change in the society,” he said.
The governor stressed on the fact that universities need to be made ‘smart’. Universities should make more and more use of e-governance and non-conventional energy sources. Universities should be linked to the latest technology and play an active role in development of society, he said.
