JAIPUR: With the last phase of Swachh Survekshan Survey 2020 in progress, Jaipur city is stinking with heaps of garbage in many areas.

Garbage heaps were expected to vanish after the door-to-door garbage collection was initiated in the city. However, this did not happen, The garbage lifting services discontinued in the city for two days during Diwali worsened the situation leading to bigger heaps of garbage. Many of the garbage heaps are at risk of catching fire.

Residents complained that garbage lifting vehicles were not visiting their areas regularly. “The frequency of garbage lifting vehicle visiting our area is once in 10 days. People are, therefore, left with no option but to dump the garbage on the heaps around the city. It does not seem anybody is serious about sanitation issues,” said Aatma Ram, a resident of Sanjay Nagar.

Rakhi Rathore, corporator of JMC’S ward number 20, said that the ward actually required eight to nine garbage lifting vehicles, but presently only four vehicles were visiting the ward areas and that too irregularly. “There have been incidents when the garbage heaps caught fire. The dumping of garbage is now causing havoc in the area. Six months before, garbage lifting was not a big issue, but now as the last phase of the survey is going on, the problem is growing,” said Rathore.

Residents said unlike last year, there was no special campaign carried out for improving the sanitary conditions in the slum areas of the city. The condition in walled city is not very different from rest of the areas, where several drains were choked due to garbage.
