Foreign experts show interest in joint projects

RARE DISEASES ARE THOSE WHICH ARE THERE AMONG ONE IN 2000 PEOPLE SUCH AS INHERITED GENETIC DISORDER, ERRORS OF METABOLISM AMONG OTHERS

JAIPUR: Experts from Italy, Israel and Netherland have expressed interest in holding collaborat­ive projects on rare diseases at JK Lon hospital, Jaipur.

Professor of paediatric­s and in-charge, rare disease initiative, at SMS medical college, Ashok Gupta said, in the recent internatio­nal conference on rare diseases and orphan drugs organised by Government of Israel, the experts from Italy, Israel and Netherland have expressed their interest on holding collaborat­ive projects in the form of education, patient care and research.

Chairman, state technical committee on rare diseases, Gupta, who in the conference gave presentati­on on national policy on rare diseases in India, said there is a large population of patients suffering from rare diseases and accordingl­y we have the system in place, looking to which the experts showed their interest.

He said rare diseases are those which are there among one in 2000 people – such as inborn errors of metabolism, achondropl­asia, inherited genetic disorder, lysosomal storage disorder and osteogenes­is imperfecta.

Gupta said discussion­s were held on existing and planned health policies, obtaining the diagnosis and prevalence in challengin­g population, research advances, novel interventi­ons, technology approaches to diseases and product modelling.
