State records first heart transplant at govt hospital

JAIPUR: The state’s first heart transplant surgery in a government-run hospital was performed at the SMS hospital on Thursday on a teenager who was facing a life threatenin­g heart condition.

Chief minister Ashok Gehlot and health minister Raghu Sharma congratula­ted the doctors on their achievemen­t.

The donor was a young man around 25 years from Rajsamand who met with an accident and was referred to SMS, Jaipur. He passed away during treatment in the trauma, said Dr SS Yadav, head of the Urology department and SMS spokespers­on.

Dr Yadav said the donor’s family agreed to organ donation and the heart and kidneys were transplant­ed to patients in SMS hospital while the liver was sent to another patient in NIMS University, Jaipur.

The heart transplant surgery was performed by Dr Anil Sharma, Dr RN Mathur and Dr Rajkumar Yadav. The operation was done around 3 am on the 17-18 year old patient who had cardiomyop­athy in which the heart muscles become weak and cannot pump blood pumping efficientl­y, Dr Yadav said. He said the disease is progressiv­e and would have been fatal if the heart transplant was not done.

Dr Yadav said one kidney each was transplant­ed on a woman and a man in the age group of 35 to 45 years. Dr Yadav performed one of the kidney transplant operations while the other was done by Dr Vinod Tomar.

The operations were done simultaneo­usly around 7.30-8 am said Dr Yadav and both patients are recovering well.

In a tweet Gehlot said, “Happy to know that the first ever heart transplant has been performed in SMS government hospital, Jaipur, today. I pray to God for it to be successful and may the patient regain health soon.”

Sharma also congratula­ted the doctors and hospital administra­tion. In a message, he said, “The SMS doctors have worked day and night to make the transplant possible.” He expressed gratitude to the family that donated the heart. “Organ donat i on can save l i ves. People should come forward to donate organs,” he said.

The news of the heart transplant came as a booster for the health department which has been under fire for the deaths of hundreds of infants in Kota, Jodhpur and Bikaner government hospitals. Gehlot had inaugurate­d the heart transplant operation theatre and ICU in October last year. SMS is the first government hospital to develop heart transplant facility in the state at a cost of ~20 crore.
