PM, Shah pay tribute to Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home mininster Amit Shah and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on Monday on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day (Shaheed Diwas) stating that the nation will always remember their sacrifices for the country.

Annua l l y , Mar c h 2 3 is observed as Shaheed Diwas to pay tribute to Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar the Indian Revolution­aries who were hanged by the British Government in 1931. The trio were found guilty of the murder of deputy police superinten­dent JP Saunders in 1928, to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the prominent social thinker and politician, Ram Manohar Lohia, on his 110th birth anniversar­y and appreciate­d his thoughts and services related to social empowermen­t.

“A big tribute to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia ji, a prominent socialist thinker and popular politician, on his birth anniversar­y. His thoughts related to social empowermen­t and service will always inspire the countrymen,” Modi tweeted.

“Shaheed Sukhdev, Bhagat Singh and Rajguru did not just fight for the country’s independen­ce while they were alive but through their sacrifice the passion of own-rule in the hearts of the countrymen. These three patriots are immortal symbols of the Independen­ce Movement who will forever inspire us for service and unity to the nation,” Shah’s tweet, roughly translated in English from Hindi, read.

“Tributes on the martyrdom day of Amar Shaheed Bhagat Singh ji, Rajguru ji, and Sukhdev ji who sacrificed their lives for the independen­ce of the country,” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.

Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh also paid tributes to freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on their death anniversar­y observed as ‘Shaheed Diwas’ (Martyr’s Day).

“My tributes to Shaheed-eAzam #Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Sukhdev & Rajguru on their #Shaheedi Diwas. My Govt has been commemorat­ing this day as #Youth Empowermen­t Day,” Singh tweeted.
