Kota teen wins gold at world boxing meet, hopes to follow in Mary Kom’s footsteps
KOTA: Kota girl Arundhiti Chaudhary, who gets inspiration from Olympic medal winner MC Mary Kom, has won a gold medal at the recently concluded Youth World Boxing Championship in Poland.
Arundhiti defeated a boxer from Poland 5-0 in the 69 kg weight category at the world championship that concluded on April 24. She was part of the Indian boxing team contingent. She defeated players of Ukraine, Columbia, Uzbekistan and other countries in the league and other rounds of the championship.
Arundhiti (18) returned to Kota on Sunday night (April 25) and was given a warm welcome by her family and fans amid adherence to Covid-19 protocols.
“Arundhiti has won 5 gold medals in international boxing championships so far, including the gold medal in Junior Best Boxer of Asia in 2018,” said her coach Ashok Gautam (48), who is the director of Mahabali Sports Academy in Kota.
Arundhiti moved from her native village Govindpur Baori in Bundi district to Kota at a young age to get training in boxing from Gautam.
“Arundhiti has made not only made her city and family proud but also her state Rajasthan and country India. A village girl of
Bundi through training for boxing in Kota has proved that she has the determination to follow the path of Mary Kom,” said Devi Singh Bhati, president of the Kota District Boxing Association.
Arundhiti’s father, Suresh Chaudhary, runs a real estate business and her mother is a housewife.
“It is our wish that someday our daughter will reach the heights of glory attained by her idol Mary Kom,” said Suresh.
He said her daughter was good at studies and he wanted her to be an engineer given the coaching facilities in Kota. But later Suresh realised to let her pursue her first love – sports.
Arundhiti, who represented the state in basketball, switched to boxing at age 15 and rose to stardom.
“When I wanted to pursue basketball further, my father said that don’t take a team sport as there is a good amount of politics there. You should take up either boxing or wrestling as they suit your nature. He informed me about the top names in both sports from MC Mary Kom and Vijender Singh to the Phogat sisters. And that’s when I decided to become a boxer, inspired by Mary Kom,” Arundhiti had told the media.
