DALIT GROOM TAKES POLICE HELP FOR WEDDING PROCESSION
UDAIPUR Fearing opposition from a section of villagers, a Dalit groom took out his wedding procession under police protection at Madra village in Udaipur district, police officials said on Wednesday.
Though the groom, Kamlesh Meghwal, is a constable posted at Hathipol police station in Udaipur, he apprehended opposition from a few upper caste people in the village if he rides a mare for his wedding procession. He approached Udaipur superintendent of police (SP) Rajeev Pachar for protection. On Pachar’s order, a deputy SP, a tehsildar and personnel from two police stations were deployed during the ceremony.
“The groom’s family called for protection as they apprehended that something wrong might happen to the weeding procession. Earlier, Dalit families had been stopped from taking out wedding processions from specific areas of the village,” deputy SP Rural Prem Dhande said. “Protection was provided to Kamlesh Meghwal’s weeding procession and the event passed off peacefully.”
Deputy sarpanch Yogendra Singh Rao, however, said, “Our village has an atmosphere of harmony. The groom took police help to get publicity.”
