Stalin’s time is finally here in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: expected by winning 89 seats despite being in power consecutiv­ely for 10 years, without former supremo J Jayalalith­aa and being in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is unfavoured in Tamil Nadu.

It was an election with neither a strong wave nor a heavy antiincumb­ency. But despite anti-incumbency not being a factor owing to Palaniswam­i nurturing his image as the common man’s chief minister and no visible dislike for him among the electorate, people desired a change and have given Stalin a chance, who put up a spirited and long drawn campaign from November 2020 ahead of his contenders.

Having been groomed for the role for five decades, Stalin is set to take the reins of Tamil Nadu as chief minister after the DMK on Sunday won a thumping majority in the assembly elections, even as incumbent chief minister Edapaddi Palaniswam­i put up a tough fight for the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), signifying the future of Dravidian politics in the south Indian state.
