Five undertrial prisoners of the Chittorgarh jail escaped from the quarantine centre of the district government hospital on Monday, police said.

Two of them were later re-arrested, police said.

After getting information, additional SP Himmat Singh Dewal, deputy SP Manish Sharma and SHO Darshan Singh reached the spot.

A separate quarantine centre has been made for the prisoners at the hospital. The escaped prisoners were kept at the centre after they tested Covid positive following their arrests. Six guards have been deployed to keep an eye on them. Apart from the five undertrials who escaped, four other prisoners were present at the quarantine centre.

On Monday morning, a quarantined prisoner informed a guard about the incident. Five prisoners were found missing from the facility. During investigation, it was found that they have escaped through the terrace, police said. “Those who fled from the hospital were arrested under various charges. Three were arrested under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, one under rape charges of rape and one under NDPS Act,” Dewal said.

“Police have arrested two of the accused around 20 kilometres from the city while they were trying to leave the district. Hunt for the other three accused is still going on. Barricading has been done in the entire district, he said.
