THE STORY OF PALESTINE’S STRUGGLE
As hostilities deepen between Israel and Palestinian militants, and as civil unrest continues in Israel between Jews and Arabs, a key conflict in West Asia has assumed a new form.
This week, we recommend cartoonist-journalist Joe Sacco’s Palestine, a non-fiction graphic novel, which is an account of his experiences in West Bank and Gaza in the early 1990s. For those who may, instinctively, not associate a comic book with hard journalism, Palestine is the perfect antidote. The book weaves in the history of the conflict with the everyday lives of people under occupation, and weaves in text and images seamlessly.
Sacco is not burdened by the false affliction of objectivity, which often ends up favouring the dominant, in a conflict marked by asymmetry on all parameters — and brings forth the Palestinian viewpoint and suffering with skill and empathy.
