SMS HOSPITAL OPENS SEPARATE OPD FOR BLACK FUNGUS CASES

JAIPUR: Amid increasing concern over the rise in number of mucormycos­is or black fungus cases, the state health department has started a separate OPD and ward at SMS hospital from Sunday.

The 33-bed ward got occupied with 23 patients in last 24 hours.

The health department has also constitute­d an 11-member mucormycos­is board, which comprises experts from medicine, ENT, ophthalmol­ogy, radiology, endocrinol­ogy, neurosurge­ry, neurology, microbiolo­gy, dental and anesthesia department. Dr Mohnish Grover has been appointed as the convener of the board.

Professor Grover from the ENT department said the state’s first separate ward and OPD has started at SMS hospital on Sunday. In the last 24 hours, 23 cases have visited the OPD. The 33-bed ward is occupied with 23 patients suffering from black fungus.

He said a mucormycos­is (black fungus) board has been constitute­d, which has experts from 11 department­s to decide the treatment protocol.

Last year from August to December, around 24 cases were reported of black fungus. Before Covid-19 one or two cases were reported in a year. But this time, during the second wave of Covid-19, the cases are exploding, he said.
