Raj braces for cyclone landfall, 7 dists may witness heavy rain

Taukatae cyclone induced depression will enter Rajasthan late on Tuesday night, even as pre-cyclonic weather effect was witnessed in form of gusty winds and rain in many part of Rajasthan on Tuesday.

According to the meteorolog­ical department, seven districts of state will witness heavy to very heavy rainfall due to the depression.

The Met department has announced red alert in over half a dozen districts – Jalore, Sirohi, Udaipur, Pali, Dungarpur, Chittorgar­h and Rajsamand – where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on Wednesday.

“The cyclone will be entering Rajasthan by late Tuesday night. At present, the system is in Gujarat near Ahmedabad. It will enter state as depression tonight and will weaken by May 20,” said Radhey Shyam, director, Met department.

He said heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in south Rajasthan and in some areas of Jaipur division on Wednesday.

The state government has deployed SDRF teams in the southern and western districts of Rajasthhan.

Additional DGP (Law and Order), Saurabh Srivastava said that companies of the Special Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) have been deployed at Sachore, Jalore, Banswara and Dungarpur to contain any aftermaths of cyclone tauktae.

“Because the cyclone is rapidly changing the course, we have also sent our teams near Pali to ensure that our preparedne­ss is complete,” he said, adding that apart from southern Rajasthan, which is likely to bear the brunt of the cyclone, additional teams drawn from other units of the state police have also been deployed in areas which are expected to be hit by the cyclone.
