One killed, 3 injured as cyclone hits Rajasthan

JAIPUR/ UDAIPUR/ KOTA/ ALWAR: One person was killed and three were injured in the state after Tauktae cyclone hit Rajasthan on Tuesday night, officials said.

Most parts of the state witnessed gusty winds and rain due to the cyclonic effect.

Jaipur, Ajmer, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Kota and Bharatpur divisions witnessed mild to heavy rainfall, according to the meteorolog­ical department.

In Veja area, located 25 kilometres from Dungarpur district, 232 mm rainfall was recorded. At Igasni village under Medta block of Nagaur district, a hut collapsed due to heavy rain. An eight-year-old girl was killed in the incident, while her pregnant mother and two sisters got injured.

According to informatio­n received from the Meteorolog­ical department, rainfall between 100 mm and 144 mm at Dewal area of Dungarpur, Aspur, Kanba and Gogunda area of Udaipur was recorded since Tuesday night.

In Udaipur, 70 mm rainfall was recorded during the night. District collector Chetan Deora, additional district magistrate, administra­tion, OP Bunkar, Chief medical and health officer Dr Dinesh Kharadi and other administra­tive officers remained present at the war room till late hours on Tuesday to keep an eye on the situation.

Due to the continuous rainfall, water level in the water bodies of Udaipur increased.

The level of Pichola Lake has gone up to 8.5 feet, whereas the water level of Lake Fateh Sagar has reached 7.5 feet till Wednesday afternoon. Floodgates of Swaroop Sagar lake were opened.

Trees, tin sheds and electricit­y poles fell at Mount Abu, Dungarpur, Ajmer and other parts of the state. Water flooded streets in Dungarpur, Udaipur and Ajmer. A road caved in Jaipur owing to the rain.

Rainfall of 3 inch was recorded in Ajmer.

Rain and cloud cover brought down mercury levels in most districts of the State. With 15.8 degree Celsius temperatur­e, Pali district witnessed lowest night temperatur­e in the state, whereas night temperatur­e in Sikar was recorded at 18.5 degrees, in Ajmer at 19.4 degrees, in Tonk at 20 degrees, in Jaipur at 20.4 degrees and in Udaipur at 21.2 degrees.

Director of Meteorolog­ical department, Radheshyam Sharma said that after entering Rajasthan on Tuesday night, the cyclone has weakened but is still prevalent as a depression over South east Rajasthan.

“Jaipur, Ajmer and Bharatpur will witness the impact of cyclone today (Wednesday) and may witness heavy rainfall in next 12 to 24 hours while districts of North eastern Rajasthan will witness mild to medium rainfall in next 24 hours,” he said.

The cyclonic impact will reduce in the state tomorrow and most districts will remain dry except Bharatpur division where mild to medium rainfall could occur.
