Curb Covid-induced anxiety with small changes in diet
As the second wave of the pandemic led to a rise in stress and anxiety, it has become imperative to take care of our mental health. “People can manage anxiety by making a few lifestyle adjustments. Including certain foods in one’s diet is the first step,” says nutritionist Preety Tyagi. Advocating the consumption of pumpkin seeds and bananas, Tyagi adds, “Pumpkin seeds are high in potassium, which maintains electrolyte balance and controls blood pressure. Pumpkin seeds and bananas alleviate stress and anxiety.”
Besides maintaining a positive mindset and taking rest, one should eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet, says dietitian and nutritionist Shweta Gupta. “Green leafy vegetables are a rich source of magnesium, which reduces anxiety-related behaviour,” she says.
Proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins work to keep our metabolism, hormones and neurotransmitters in check and balance our moods, asserts clinical dietitian and nutritionist Kanchan Patwardhan. “A diet loaded in vitamin B complexes like folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 is essential. These keep homocysteine levels low,” she adds.
Try adding these in your diet too: Dark chocolate: It contains theobromine, which lowers anxiety. Fermented food: Idli and dosa improve the functioning of the gut and helps deal with anxiety. Citrus fruits: Citrus fruits influence immune response and puts one in a better frame of mind. Chamomile: This herbal remedy has antioxidant, and relaxant properties.
