Former Bengal CM admitted to hospital
Former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya,77, who was under treatment at home for Covid-19, was hospitalised on Tuesday after his oxygen level dropped below 90%. He has been put on non-invasive ventilation and underwent a CT scan of his lungs. “Bhattacharya is stable right now. A panel of six doctors has been formed for his treatment,” said Dr Rupali Basu, the CEO of Woodlands Hospital, where the former chief minister is admitted to.
Bhattacharya and his wife Mira, 71, tested positive for Covid-19 on May 18. Mira was admitted to the Woodlands Hospital the same night and discharged on Monday.
Bhattacharya, one of the senior-most leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M), suffers from Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and his movements are restricted. “Though the carbon dioxide level in his blood is not very high, COPD can make things difficult for a Covid patient. We are using injectable steroids and antibiotics. Since steroids can increase blood sugar levels, we have to administer insulin as well. We have to keep in mind his age and comorbid conditions,” said Dr Kaushik Chakraborty, one of the doctors treating him KOLKATA:
