SC seeks Bengal govt reply on plea over post-poll violence

The West Bengal government informed the Supreme Court on Tuesday that three people have been arrested in connection with the alleged killing of two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in poll-related violence on May 2 in the state and FIRS have been registered in these cases.

The state government told a vacation bench of justices Vineet Saran and BR Gavai that investigat­ion is going on.

The Supreme Court issued a notice to the West Bengal government and police seeking their responses to a plea on post-poll violence in the state, and agreed to hear the matter in the week commencing June 7.

The apex court also issued notices to the Centre and the National Human Rights Commission, to file counter affidavits on the plea.

The petition has accused the police of allegedly shielding ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers involved in the violence and threatenin­g the victims to withdraw their complaints. DELHI:
