WHY TREAT SINGERS LIKE DEVIS, ASKS NEHA BHASIN The singer says there is no need to put artistes on a pedestal as it becomes restrictive

Neha Bhasin has been at the receiving end of social media flak surrounding her body and for donning bold outfits. She believes that the problem lies with the perception of people who believe in deifying singers. “The image of a singer in people’s head is that of a Devi. Hence, they connect singing with something which is very pious. It might be true to some extent but then, I wonder, why put music on a pedestal? Nobody deserves to be gagged like that,” says Bhasin.

She believes that this perception is the reason “people aren’t comfortable with a singer being opinionated and wearing clothes a certain way”. She explains, “This association is strange. When I had started out, I only had Alisha Chinai as a reference point. I’m now guessing that I’ll be one of the few people who’ll inspire the next generation of female singers.”

Apart from a change in people’s mindsets, what does she expect from the future? “People have now realised that independent music is important. Having said that, I would be very happy for film music to come back. I don’t want anybody’s business to suffer. What would also be great is licensing music from big labels including independent ones,” she says.

Much like the rest of showbiz, the former member of Viva has resumed work. However, she’s making sure to wear a mask and face shield while recording and dubbing inside studios.

“My priority is my health and the well-being of those around me. We’re getting our RT-PCR done before every shoot. I’ve mentally prepared myself to step out only for work. I’m not socialising much outside that,” the singer concludes.
