The party’s media coordinator Sunil Rohta said the district administration turned down the request, saying it could lead to a stampede at the mahapanchayat.
Rohta said 120 kg of flower petals collected for showering on farmers from helicopters were sent to Muzaffarnagar. Party workers and leaders later showered them on farmers who were going to attend mahapanchayat, he said.
Extending support to the Samyukt Kisan Morcha’s kisan mahapanchayat in Muzaffarnagar on Sunday, Muslim villagers welcomed the participants on their way to the meet, cooking halwa (a dessert) and serving it to them at Sujdu village of the district.
The villagers stopped the farmers’ buses, cars and other vehicles to offer them halwa before the mahapanchayat.
Gulam Mohd Jaula, a farmer leader and president of the Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Manch, claimed that Muslims were actively supporting the mahapanchayat and had prepared food in their villages for the farmers. Jaula said the Muslims helped BKU chief Naresh Tikait organise panchayats in many Muslim-dominated villages like Tawli, Dasher, Sherburne, Jaula ahead of the mahapanchayat. Jaula also said he shared the stage with Naresh Tikait at a few such panchayats in Budhna block of Muzaffarnagar district.
Jaula and many other local Muslim leaders said they believed that the decades’ old unity between Hindus and Muslims was ruptured after the Muzaffarnagar riots of September 2013, but the ongoing farmers’ movement helped bring both the communities closer again.
Earlier, Rashtriya Lok Dal chief the late Ajit Singh had organised a series of bhaichara sammelans (meetings aimed to promote amity) in and around Muzaffarnagar. After his demise, his son Jayant Choudhary has taken up the task.
