Now, Jagadgurukulam in Kashi to impart education based on Vedas
MEERUT : A Jagadgurukulam will be established in Kashi to impart education based on Vedas and other traditional curriculum to around 10,000 children across the country. With its main centre in Kashi, the smaller units will be established across the entire country.
These centres will function under the patronage of Sharda Peethadhiswar Jagatguru Shankracharya Swami Swaroopanand Sarswati.
Speaking to HT here during his return journey from Badrinath dham, Swami Avimukteshwaranand who is heir of Shankaracharya, said the concept of Jagadgurukulam has been derived from ancient Hindu Vedas. He said the word ‘Kulpati’ (vice-chancellor) coined in modern times was derived from western education system. He said in Vedas the world Kulpati denotes a guru who provides free education to 10,000 students and takes care of their food and other requirements. In Vedas and Puranas, it was mentioned that Rishi Bhardwaj, Durwasa and many other such saints imparted education to over 10,000 students and therefore they were known as ‘Kulpati’. Taking into consideration the concept of a Kulpati in the Vedas and Puranas, the matter was discussed with Jagatguru Shankracharya who liked the

idea and gave his blessings to execute it, he said.
Swami said that the main premises of Jagadgurukulam would be developed in 150 acre land in Kashi where 10,000 students would be enrolled. He said Kashi has been selected because it has been an important centre of education since ages. “Its construction would be started soon,” he said.
He said that to meet out the financial requirements of the centre, it has been suggested to motivate 10,000 guardians who could adopt 10,000 targeted students. Besides establishing Jagadgurukulam’s main centre at Kashi, smaller units of 108 or 1008 students would be developed across the country to enrol 10,000 additional students where their local guardians would take care of them.
Swami Avimukteshwaranand said that education in these centres would be imparted based on Vedas, Puranas, Memaansa, Dharamshastra, Nyay and Vedang because these are defined as Vidyas since ancient time. He said that as it is time of modern education, it would also be accommodated in the curriculum but mainly it would be based on traditional ancient Indian education.
He said that a similar centre has been developed in the ashram of MP where 200 students are being educated and they have been adopted by their 200 guardians.
