3 arrested in K’taka assault case: Police

BENGALURU: Mangaluru city police on Saturday arrested three people in connection with an incident in which a group of men had assaulted a 20-year-old man on Thursday, officials privy to the matter said on Sunday.

The man was identified as Seyad Raseem Ummar, a third year student at Nitte Institute of Technology, Karkala. The accused have been identified as Muthu (18), Prakash (21) and Rakesh (23), who are from Mangaluru, the police said, adding that they have links with rightwing groups Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

The incident occurred near Nanthoor circle in Mangaluru. Umar was travelling in a bus with a women from Karkala, when the accused stopped the bus, dragged him out of the vehicle and thrashed him, police said.

An FIR was registered at the Kadri police station. In the complaint, Seyad had stated that around 4pm, a group of men had entered the bus the two were travelling in and abused him. The accused had also asked for his ID card, after which they thrashed him, Seyad alleged.

“On Thursday, Seyad was returning from Karkala in a private bus at 4pm. Near Nanthoor junction, three to four unknown people entered the bus, abused him verbally and thrashed him. They also threatened him if he told anyone about the incident. The miscreants then dragged him out of the bus and beat him up with sticks,” the FIR stated.

After the incident, Alok Kumar, ADGP, law and order, had tweeted on Friday that appropriat­e action was being taken against the accused.
