- Suresh Foujdar

A 47- year- old wanted cow smuggler, who mowed down a home guard in Dausa district in October last year, was arrested in Deeg district on Sunday night. Police said, he was held when he and his accomplice were smuggling cows in a mini truck. His accomplice managed to escape.

Police have identified the accused as Idrish Mev, a native of Fatehpur village under Pahari police station jurisdiction.

On October 25, 2023, Mev had mowed down a 45-year-old home guard on Jaipur-Agra national highway-21. Police said, a team along with the home guard were deployed to check vehicles for the assembly elections when a Haryana-registered vehicle broke the police barricading. When the home guard tried to stop the vehicle, the driver mowed him down and fled.

The cops rushed the victim the district hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Following the incident, police arrested two people who were travelling with Mev, however, he had been absconding since then, said police.

On Sunday, the district special team of Deeg police received information about the cow smugglers and set up barricades. When the police indicated for the vehicle to stop, it instead broke the barricades and tried to escape.

“However, after travelling for nearly three kilometres, the vehicle’s tyre burst. A man inside the mini truck was then arrested and the nine cows were rescued. His accomplice managed to escape,” said Deeg superintendent of police (SP), Rajesh Kumar Meena.

Police said, a dozen more cases are registered against Mev at different police stations of the state. Police said, they are questioning the accused.

“We have formed teams to identify and arrest his accomplice,” added the SP.
