KALAMBOLI: While encroachments and illegal constructions are eating into the public spaces in the city, many of the poor are living out in the open, unable to find proper shelter.

Several migrants have found a home under the Kalamboli circle flyover, opposite MGM hospital. Cidco officials say they will soon clear the area as they are illegally residing there. Residents have long demanded action in this matter so that such areas can be used for civic purposes. There are also fears of increasing crime and health problems due to unhygienic conditions.

Hindustan Times decided to get closer to these people and understand why they came to stay here and what their problems are.

We learned that most have come from various cities to find jobs here. Unable to afford to pay rent, they end up finding vacant places and make temporary shelters. Children are the worst affected in these groups. Many of these migrants end up starving as they are unable to find jobs in the city, and do not have access to basic medical care. Death due to illness is a fact of life in their community.

Many problems arise due to a lack of education. Children are not able to afford school, as they have to earn their daily bread. “How can children stay away from their responsibilities and go to school?” asked one mother.

Shyam, an eight-year-old boy, said, “Many have come forward to help us and provide for our basic needs. But no one has taken a single step other than pay lip service.”
