NAVI MUMBAI: Commuters using Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport ( NMMT) have repeatedly complained about the poor quality NMMT buses, and lack of connectivity to interior areas of city, but the NMMT seems to have its hands full dealing with ticketless trav-

MORE THAN 4,000 TICKETLESS TRAVELLERS WERE CAUGHT IN THE NMMT DRIVES THIS YEAR

ellers. This year, the NMMT raked in Rs4.57 lakh by cracking down on more than 4,000 ticketless travellers.

NMMT caters to around 2.70 lakh commuters daily. Every month, at least 300 commuters get caught for ticket less travelling. Ticket-less travellers on ordinary buses are liable to pay the full fare for the distance travelled along with the equivalent excess charge, a minimum of Rs100.

Those caught in air- conditioned buses will have to shell out Rs200, along with the full fare for the distance travelled.

“The NMMT ticket checking staff has around 200 personnel. They check for ticketless travellers in the buses and also at the terminus and depots” said Pandit Tandil, NMMT official. If the NMMT officials are to be believed, the transport department is facing an acute shortage of buses as many have been kept for repairs in garages.
