Damaged electric posts pose danger to Panvel residents
Posing a great threat to the residents of Panvel, officials of Panvel Municipal Council (PMC) have left damaged electrical posts unattended and circuit boxes open in Panvel city.
The situation is no different even near important markets, municipal buildings as well as populated areas.
Though Panvel city is supposedly on the verge of major development, this situation points to the lack of basic infrastructure. Rusted and damaged posts, open junction boxes are a common sight in Panvel.
Electricity utility poles are used to support power lines which distribute electricity to different parts of the city. The network of these power lines using utility poles are vital for a city.
The residents, however, allege that officials do not seem to care about their pathetic condition despite complaints.
In some areas, electrical equipment on the poles are within easy reach of even children. Utility poles are also used to carry cables of street lights. These, too, are in a damaged condition.
Though not officially recognised, there have also been reports of power thefts from electric poles and equipment.
The slum areas are the most affected due to the neglect of the issue by the authorities. Residents of these areas claim that there have been several accidents due to damaged poles and open electrical equipment.
The residents said they have long been demanding the replacement of rusted poles.
Eapen KP, a resident of Panvel, said: “PMC has to take some immediate action 0to address the safety issues of the city and its people. Electric poles are one such important issue that require a permanent solution. Ignoring these facts and problems will only create greater barriers in development and will also affect normal life in city.”
When contacted, Shantaran Upaye, administrative officer of PMC, said: “We will take every action to ensure the safety of public. The PMC annual budget for this year has an allocation for new electric posts and these will be installed soon.”
