PANVEL: Placing strong impediments towards the developments in Panvel, the filthy nullahs carrying waste water have been a bane for the residents. Many complaints have been given about the filthiness, the unhygienic conditions and the need to clean the canals.

Most of this water flows into the river and makes the water resources filthier. Residents blame the officials for the state of affairs and the pollution of river water. The network of canals carrying waste water is spread all over the city __ both in the residentialand commercial areas.

Narrow canals situated close to the roads and streets are often a nightmare for pedestrians and lead to several accidents. They are also often found to be blocked, as they are a favourite place to throw waste materials. Slum dwellers are the most affected, as in congested areas waste water flows between rooms and leads to many health problems.

“The least we can expect are decent environment near our houses. There is foul smell coming through are windows which give the view of the open nullahs. Our relatives do not like to stay in our houses due to the mosquitoes.” said Kailash Patil, a local resident.

Sanu Mathew, another resident of Panvel said “PMC has allocated a good amount of money for beautification of ponds, lakes and other water resources in the city. It should pay a close attention to its waste water.
