Slums on the rise in Panvel

Ashraf Khan, a resident of Panvel, said, “The increase in the number of slums may be because of an increase in construction activity around the city.”
Shantaram Upaye, administrative officer of Panvel Municipality, said, “We realise the problem and are taking steps to avoid hurdles in the path of development.”
He added that the Panvel Municipal Council had spent a good amount of money for the rehabilitation of slum dwellers.
PANVEL: The growing number of slums in Panvel, points towards a limited number of open spaces and public areas in the city.
In fact areas under and near the new bridge has witnessed a rapid increase in slums, with unhygienic living conditions and solid waste disposal on important roads coming in the way of the city’s development.
These slums are also becoming a safe haven for anti-social activities in the city, claimed sources who lived in nearby areas. It is also alleged that slums dwellers get support from political parties, which protects them against any attempt to remove them from the areas.
It is often seen that solid
