VASHI: In yet another accident on Palm Beach Road, an 18year-old Sanpada resident died after she fell off a bike she was riding pillion on and was allegedly run over by a vehicle on Thursday night.

The incident took place at around 9.15pm near Moraj Circle in Sanpada, when Neha Sonawane and her friend Joanprit Jain, 22, were on their way to Vashi. Jain has been arrested by the Turbhe police for rash and negligent driving.

“Sonawane and Jain were on their way to Vashi to pick up notes from a college senior as her exams were going on,” said police sub- inspector PR Sawant from Turbhe police station.

Sonawane was a resident of Shivteerth building in sector 5 of Sanpada and was a BMM student of Oriental College.

“Jain was riding rashly and it seems that he lost control of the bike near the circle, following which the two fell off the bike,” said the inspector.

Jain told the police that after Sonawane fell off the bike, she was crushed under a vehicle that came from behind. However, the police said that details of the vehicle were not available.

“There is no information about the vehicle that may have run the girl over. Usually, when someone is crushed under a vehicle, the body is in a bad condition. However, this is not the case with Sonawane,” said an official from Turbhe police station.

The official added, “The girl has a head injury. We are interrogating Jain to find out if the death was caused only because of the fall from the bike. There is a possibility that no other vehicle was involved.”

Further investigation about what actually happened during the accident is also underway.
