NAVI MUMBAI: Doctors in the city are alarmed by the increase in cases of hypertension and high blood pressure, especially among the youth.

“One in three people have high blood pressure. I diagnose at least two patients everyday with high blood pressure,” said Dr Rahul Gupta, cardiologist, Fortis Hospital in Vashi.

What is even more alarming is the rising number of cases in the younger generation. “Earlier only middle-aged people were diagnosed with high blood pressure, but now people between the age of 20 to 30 are often victim to hypertension,” said Gupta.

To raise awareness about blood pressure and observe World Health Day, MGM Hospital, Vashi, will organise a series of interactive seminars on Sunday from 12.30pm to 8pm.

Dr Deepa Jayram , nephrologist with MGM hospital said that about 80% to 90% of her patients were hypertensive. “Most people have essential hypertension which is the most common type is usually genetic or age-related and is seen in people after 30.”

“It s a myth that headaches, nervousness or sweating are the only signs of high blood pressure. However, it is a silent killer and the only way to know for sure is to get a check-up,” added Gupta.
