NAVI MUMBAI: Summer holidays are be the perfect time to get off that couch and take part in all those sports that you were unable to because of your rigorous academic curriculum.

Among the many associations in the city that have planned month-long sporting activities such as athletics, lawn tennis and basketball, is Vashibased Navi Mumbai Sports Association (NMSA). The association has lined up 12 different sporting and recreational activities for summer, as a part of its 17th Annual Summer Coaching Camp. The camp begins on April 14 and will include athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, kabaddi, gymming, skating, etc.

“We will also organise special sessions and lectures about nutrition and diet, sporting injuries and the requisite care needed and motivation-based training for a winning mindset,” said Dattaray Gorde, sports coordinator, NMSA.

If swimming is your sport, then the CBD Belapur-based Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) has a special ‘ Learn 2 Swim’ series of camps for children and adults. The camps will be conducted in four batches during April and May. While the first batch already kicked off on April 2, others will begin on April 23, may 14 and June 4.

“The idea behind the camp is to encourage newcomers to take up swimming. There is also a family fitness centre at the venue,” said Savio DSouza, project coordinator, YMCA.

Yoga is another activity to look forward to. Vashi-based Yoga Vidya Niketan is organising a 10day yoga workshop for children between the age of 6 and 12. The workshop will begin April 15.

“We have been organising these workshops for the 10 years now and this year the theme will be ‘self- development through yoga’. We will teach yogic exercises, surya namaskar, shudhi kriya, bhajan chanting, sanskrit shloka recitation and a lot more,” said Jayashree Chitnis, co-ordinator, Yoga Vidya Niketan.

Nerul’s Vazirani National Sports Academy will conduct a special fitness camp for children called ‘ B- Fit’ from April 10. “Children often ignore the importance of fitness and spend a lot of time on the computer. We will train kids between the age of 7 and 14 in gymming, yoga and more,” said Jaideep Vazirani, camp coordinator.
