Study finds holes in city’s R970-cr project for waste
MUMBAI: Days after gross financial irregularities in contracts to manage dumping grounds came to light, here is another breach in the way the city’s waste is managed. Findings of a pilot study to overlook waste collection show how contractors appointed at a hefty cost are cutting corners and skipping half the work they were appointed for.
The BMC appointed seven contractors at a whopping cost of Rs970 crore last year. The study, in which garbage- collection vehicles in four areas were monitored using the global positioning system ( GPS), found contractors skipping collection spots they have been paid for.
Contractors were found sidestepping the schedule fixed by ward officials to pick up waste from localities in Dadar, Goregaon, Chembur and parts of island city, and not making as many trips as they should.
The civic body confirmed the findings. “The findings need to be corroborated with local conditions. In any case, we are looking to tighten the screws on the way waste is collected,” said deputy municipal commissioner Prakash Patil.
