MUMBAI: If you find that the contractor responsible for collecting waste from your locality is taking you for a ride, you can soon do something about it.

Startled by the revelations of a pilot study that showed how firms appointed for waste-collection are cutting corners and wasting the taxpayers’ money ( see box), the civic body has decided to involve the city’s active citizenry to keep tabs on these contractors. HT had reported about the study on Friday.

The BMC is now speaking to citizen groups and advanced locality managements (ALMs); encouraging them to form social audit teams to check the way in which waste is being collected in their localities.

“We will do everything to empower citizens and make it easier for them to keep an eye on contractors,” said Prakash Patil, deputy municipal commissioner, solid waste management. The BMC is also planning to install a new software to ensure that citizens can promptly reports their findings to officials concerned.
