You’re sure to have a momo-rable meal here

- SANGHAMITRA SENGUPTA

Popular as a street snack in many parts of the country but picking up only recently in this part of the world, it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t enjoy a momo. Flavourful fillings of all kinds wrapped in a meltin-the-mouth casing, steamed to perfection and served with tangy dipping sauces, biting into a momo is guilt-free gastronomical journey.

But if you’re unconvinced about eating them off a stall, you can head straight to Momo Central in sector 15 Sanpada, a little gem that gives you a variety of 34 momos with two kinds of sauces as accompaniments.

Started by 39-year- old Navanita Roy in November last year, Momo Central is already abuzz with customers. Roy started with mix vegetable, corn, paneer and mushrooms among the vegetarian momos, and prawns, chicken and mutton as nonvegetarian options. “But as business picked up, I started experimenting with different fillings to offer more variety to momo lovers,” she says.

Momos are essentially Tibetan, but are known by different names in different regions the world over. And being made of simple ingredients, it is an easy dish to master. “The wrapper is made of flour, salt and oil. Since momos are non-spicy, the pungent red and green chutneys complement the dish perfectly,” Roy adds.

At the restaurant, all the fillings are made with fresh ingredients every day, Roy allows no leftovers. While the little eatery has seating only for about 15 people, home delivery and takeaway orders keep business booming. “New fillings such as spinach and corn, mushroom and fish are getting a good response. I plan to introduce some more varieties in the next few months, we are still experimenting with those,” Roy adds.

The momos are available in three forms — steamed, pan fried and deep fried.
