Out on bail, stalker at­tacks 22-year- old

MUM­BAI: In an in­ci­dent that re­it­er­ates how un­safe women are on city streets, a 29-year- old man, who had been ar­rested thrice be­fore for stalk­ing and mo­lest­ing a 22-year-old woman, at­tacked her with a knife and tried to stran­gle her in Kurla on Wed­nes­day evening, days af­ter be­ing re­leased on bail.

The woman put up a fight and es­caped with cuts on her fore­head. She was walk­ing with her friend near Rat­nadeep Jewellers, close to Mirja Chawl, at 7.30 pm, when Amit Vas­ant Tul­sankar ap­proached her. He grabbed her by the neck and tried to choke her. When she fought back, he pulled out a knife and threat­ened to kill her. Some passersby rushed to her aid, but the ac­cused fled.

The woman has been ad­mit­ted to Bhabha Hos­pi­tal, where doc­tors said her con­di­tion is sta­ble. Po­lice said Tul­sankar had pro­posed mar­riage to her sev­eral times, but she re­jected him. He then started ha­rass­ing her.

The Kurla po­lice ar­rested him from near the Mithi river.
