NEW DELHI: A day after she was admitted to the AIIMS trauma centre with severe injuries, the six-year-old girl found at a public toilet in south Delhi continues to remain in serious but stable condition.

The Delhi Police, meanwhile, are on the lookout for a lone assailant who they suspect was behind the brutal rape of the victim and is probably a drug addict living in the same Badarpur slum where the incident was reported from on Friday evening.

“Around 400 to 500 houses in the slum have been searched to verify whether anyone living in them is absconding,” said Ajay Chaudhary, additional commissioner of police (southeast). “We are on the right track and are confident of nabbing the accused.”

Chaudhary’s assurance came after dozens of angry slum resi- dents protested for around 45 minutes outside the Badarpur police station demanding the arrest of the suspect within 24 hours.

The victim is in ICU at AIIMS where she was shifted after a three- hour surgery late on Friday night. She was examined by a team of three specialists, including a senior surgeon and gynaecologist, soon after arrival at around 5.30pm on Friday.
