NERUL: The NRI police arrested a 23-year-old resident of Karave village, Nerul, for allegedly dumping her new-born child in a garbage bin.

The woman was arrested after she went looking for the man who had impregnated her. The woman’s parents have also been arrested for abetting the crime.

On the morning of April 13, the baby boy was found in a garbage bin in Karave village by a passer- by. The police were then informed about the baby, but failed to get any leads in the case until Thursday.

“The woman who sold fish near in the village met Manirul Shaikh, 26, who often came to the area to meet someone. The two started having an affair and also had physical relations,” said police subinspector Narayan Devrukhkar of NRI police station.

Although when she got pregnant, Shaikh promised to marry her, later he starting evading the issue, said Devrukhkar. Finally on April 13, the woman gave birth to a boy, by which time Shaikh had vanished.

However, fearing that they would have to face social stigma, the child was thrown in the garbage bin within hours of his birth. Sources alleged that since the woman’s parents feared that she would face problems in getting married if the child stayed with her.

After the police found the baby, he was taken to DY Patil hospital in Nerul, and on April 20 he was then shifted to Vishwa Balak Ashram, an orphanage in the node.

Meanwhile, the woman had frantically started looking for Shaikh in the APMC market, where had claimed to own a fruit business.

“When she did not find Shaikh at the market, she approached APMC police station on Thursday to inquire about him,” said Devrukhkar.

Her desperation to find Shaikh aroused the suspicion of the cops following which they tactfully interrogated her. “She finally decided to confide in them and told them the com- plete story including the fact that the infant found in the garbage bin was her baby,” he added.

Following this, the APMC police handed her over to the NRI police who then arrested her parents for abetting the crime of dumping the baby in the bin.

The trio, who was presented in the court on Friday, has been remanded to police custody for six days. Police are now on the lookout for Shaikh. Although he claimed that he was from West Bengal, police said that he could also be a Bangladesh immigrant. A search has been initiated in West Bengal as well.
