HOW TO SOLVE THE PARKING PICKLE

While acknowledging the parking mess in Navi Mumbai, experts suggested a few ways by which the city’s parking problems can be resolved

-

Transporters should purchase parking space

About 7,000-8,000 containers and heavy vehicles pass through the area and are haphazardly parked in the Kalamboli area of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) every day. This results in major traffic snarls in the area, which then spills on to other roads during peak hours. One plausible solution for this problem is to ensure that a permanent parking space is purchased before the vehicle is purchased

Special parking facility for

heavy vehicles

This option is already being explored by Cidco and a parking facility to accommodate about 20,000 trucks should be ready in the next 2-3 years

Parking space for light vehicles

The regional transport authorities should sell parking space for cars and other light vehicles while registering them. This will help de-congest the roads

Stricter monitoring by traffic police

The traffic police in the city should patrol busy areas more frequently and take strict action against double parking and errant motorists

Parking space in housing societies

Many urban planners have also suggested that new housing societies being should ensure that adequate space is allotted for parking for residents and outsiders. The Cidco buildings that are being re-developed should also allocate space for parking

Civic body’s initiatives

Taking heed of the situation, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has also planned a multi-level parking facility in sector 15, Vashi. The parking facility near the St Lawerence School nullah will also be opened for public soon, civic officials said.
