Most expatriate­s in Navi Mumbai are from US, China

CBD BELAPUR: Equipped with stateof-the-art medical, education and housing facilities, Navi Mumbai has truly become global city with 1,825 nationals from 101 countries residing here.

According to figures of the Navi Mumbai police, the most number of expatriate­s in the city come from USA (308) and are followed by China (258), Pakistan (199), Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc.

Besides Europe and Asia, nationals from Africa also have footprints in the city.

Of the 1,825, around 64 expatriate­s are from Nigeria, followed by 13 from South Africa, 3 from Tanzania, 6 from Sudan, 2 from Tunisia, 6 from Zambia, 1 from Zimbabwe, 2 each from Uganda and Ghana and 1 from Namibia.

Of 1,825 foreign nationals, around 800 nationals came to the city in search of employment and have brought with them 438 dependents. The Chinese have the largest contingent of those work- ing in the city at 183. The city also has 108 expatriate­s who have come here for higher studies, while 54 are here for business. Forty-three are here for medical treatment, 9 for tourism and 3 for research.

“So far, we haven’t had any major problems with expatriate­s in the city since most come eher in search of employment,” said a senior police official.

Interestin­gly, although there are a number of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, the official list of immigrants stands at 7.

“Our records are based on the registrati­ons with the police. However, we are always on the lookout for illegal immigrants,” the police official added.
